So much for knowing it all...

To prepare for a social media workshop I am co-hosting with writer friend, Erin York, on December 8th, I have been researching all the things I don't know. I didn't think it would be that long of a list.

I was wrong. So much for knowing it all... *laughs*

Just with Facebook, I have learned some really cool tips that I didn't not know, per se, but really just hadn't though of. For example, do you have an author or book page? Do you have it listed as a place your work on your personal profile? Thanks to Andrea Vahl at the Social Media Examiner I now have another way to link my page and my personal profile so that when people look me up, they can click right on that to find their way to my page.

It's such a small thing, but what a difference it could make for those readers who might try to look me up, wanting my author page. It also makes it more simple for my friends and family to find my author page.

Twitter is my weak link in social media. The point of it escaped me for so long, but now I am beginning to get it thanks in large part to KL Grady at Five Scribes. I thought at first it was just a chaotic stream of single thoughts with no purpose or direction. That began to clear a little as I got in and really paid attention to what was being said. But I didn't truly understand until I read this blog post from KL.
"Tip 3: Social networking is about building relationships and extending your tribe. It's about community. Your content should reflect that."

I'm not sure exactly why I got this concept so easily with Facebook, but not Twitter, but I get it now. And I like Twitter much more for the realization. Thank KL.

I could go on with the things I've learned, but I won't. Suffice is to say, I am learning that there is a lot about social media I don't know. So, if you have some hard earned nuggets of wisdom that you think I should know to share with those that will be attending my workshop, please leave a comment. I would really appreciate being educated.

Anyone else looking forward to seeing this as much as I am? I've been trying to get through the first half of the book forever. I might just get through it with this as my reward in December. *grin*

  1. Interesting article! Thanks, Sabrina! I'm sadly lacking on fb... I'm just starting to try and build there---I'm totally a fan of twitter!

  2. Hey,

Thanks for signing up for "AlexFest" :) and the only thing I would suggest mentioning is for newbies to switch OFF Captcha... Blogger catches all my anonymous spam and captcha is sooooo annoying :)

    GOOD LUCK :)

  3. Oh good luck with your workshop! I know I'm terrible with the social media thing, and twitter is by far my weak point. I guess I'm still learning by observation. And I too am looking forward to Les Miserables, a lot of heavy hitters in that movie, I hope it'll be a good one.

  4. I actually did not care for the book so much. It took me FOREVER to get through. I LOVE the musical though, so I'm way psyched about the movie :D

  5. I'm not sure I've figured out Twitter either.
And I'm sorry Samantha, I didn't realize I wasn't following your blog. Epic Ninja fail...

  6. I think we are all learning social media as we're doing it. I'm going to go look at that FB article now, because that is definitely my weak link. My poor FB page is so neglected . . .

But I'm going to do this after I watch the trailer. For about the thirtieth time :)

  7. I'm also just learning about social networking... It plays a very important part in the bigger "writerly" picture, but is also a MAJOR time suck!
