Buyer Beware

Over the last month, I've been experiencing a building allergic reaction. Like a potion or spell gone wrong(or is that right?), a small patch of itchy and very tiny little blisters will pop up, drive me crazy, then disappear a few hours later. I ignored it at first, determined to see it as nothing other than a freak rash. I really should know better. I need the antidote or counterspell, if you will.

You see, I'm allergic to formaldehyde.  Yeah, you read it correctly. This nasty substance, which puts any self respecting, evil witch's brew to shame and gives embalming fluid and fingernail polish it's nasty odor, builds up in my body over time until it's gained enough momentum to break my entire body out in a rash of tiny blisters that itch to no end. Weird, I know.

I've only broken out a total of 4 times over the whole of my 31 years. The 1st time was due to an everyday use of fingernail polish when I was a teen. I stopped coloring my nails and the outbreak went away. Over the years, I'll occasionally get a mani/pedi, but I'll be sure to give it at least six months between each time to keep an outbreak from occurring. I thought I was golden. (Apparently, that evil enchantress throwing hexes my way is much more determined than I thought.)

Willful ignorance (and not having a healthy respect for your local potions master) is not a good idea, folks.

The outbreaks are getting closer together, despite the fact that I hardly ever wear fingernail polish, the last two outbreaks occurring within the last 5 years. What has changed? I could no longer ignore the situation, nor give fingernail polish sole responsibility for my dilemma.

Did you know that formaldehyde is in, what seems like, EVERYTHING? Even though I'm allergic to it, I had no idea. I check labels and when I don't see the actual name 'fermaldahyde', I think I'm good. WRONG!

Sneaky sorceress, er, I mean, manufacturers use all kinds of synonyms and chemicals that 'act like' formaldehyde. Thanks to globalhealingcenter.com for this list of ingredients to look for and avoid:

*Formalin   *Methanal   *Oxymethyline   *Urea   *1,3-Dioxetane   *Quaternium 15   *Methylaldehyde
*Methylene Oxide   *Formic Aldehyde   *Oxomethane Formalin   *Phenol Formaldehyde

Now I'm off to check the products I'm currently using for the cult culprit responsible for this itchy reaction. And hopefully, I can prevent any future discomfort. *sigh*

Source: The Hidden Formaldehyde

Have you checked out my novella, Lost Haven, yet? Get it soon. The sequel is finished and should be out this fall!!

Anyone else ticked off an enchantress lately, as I apparently have? *grin* No? Do you have a weird allergy? Is your reaction instant or does it take time to build up, like mine? Do you like YA Fantasy with female protagonists? Have you read Lost Haven?

Self-Promotion is Important

As many of you know, my first published work, Lost Haven-A Shine Novella was published in March. Having prepared for this day, I had my self-promotion tools lined up and it did very well. What many of you may not know is that I own a trophy company with my hub. The month of May is what I like to refer to as our 'hell month' as it is end of school awards time. Unfortunately, with long sixteen hour plus days, I barely had time to eat much less keep up with my promotions. With constant deadlines, I barely thought of my debut novella. My numbers plummeted.

I knew self-promotion was important, but after this experience, I now realize it more than ever.

So, I'm going to share 3 promotion tips that I've found to be the most important.

1. Consistency- This one has been made painfully clear for me. You have to keep up a consistent effort to promote your work. It won't promote itself. You can't expect to promote for a short amount of time, then just stop and it'll keep being seen by new readers. You have to put in the time and hard work...and it will be lots of time and hard work.

2. Be Shameless- I don't mean spam, but you can't be afraid to share your work. If you're anything like me, you feel self-conscious when you talk about your work. I've had to figure out how to get over that...I'm still working on that one...and you must get over it also. If you don't tell people about your work, no one else is going to either. Your friends' posts include pictures of their kids, their political leanings, and even the annoying post about what they eat for every God loving meal. So why can't you share what you're doing?

3. Hone your craft while you self-promote- If you're a writer like me, write amazing blog posts, share snippets of your writing, participate in blog hops that bring people to you. If you're an artist, post samples of your work on Pinterest. If you're a musician, post samples of your music on YouTube. This will give people a taste of your voice, style, or sound and create interest that will bring them back for more.

And now for my shameless plug *grin*, Check out my debut novella, Lost Haven, on Amazon today in e-book or print version, coming soon to audio. And if you've already read it, please be sure to back and leave a review.

My 7 year old sounds like a teen...and it's my fault! Plus, Fallen Soldier Memorial Statue

I'm a light gamer. I say 'light' because I don't play all the time, I don't care about building a community of gamer friends, and I'm not obsessive about gaming. Most gamers probably wouldn't even consider me to be one of them. I use gaming as a place to go when I need an escape when I'm between good book series. I play Guild Wars 2 on the computer occasionally, I like Minecraft, and I love pulling out the old Playstation 2 to play Dark Cloud 2. I like playing PvZ: Garden Warfare on Xbox with my kiddo and Candy Crush and Doombad on my iPhone.

Like I said, 'light' gamer is definitely a good description for me.

My 7 year old, however, is well on his way to being a serious gamer. He already knows more than I do. Lately, his favorite thing is to watch videos on YouTube by his favorite little teenage gamers. He thinks these teenagers and their melodramatic antics as one of their characters is destroyed and must be respawned, is hilarious. It gets so bad that he'll end up bouncing up and down in excitement as the teenager yells out while his character is annihilated. It's quite the racket.

Still it's harmless, right?! I mean they are appealing to my son's maturity level without crossing any lines I don't like.

The other day, the hub was giving my son a lecture after the kiddo left half his lunch on his plate. You know the one: There are children all over the world who are starving and would love to have even a quarter of the food you get every meal.
The kiddo
The kiddo took this with a straight face. When his dad finally finished (the hub really likes to lecture :P hehehehe) the kiddo looked his dad in the eye, pushed his plate across the table, and said, "Then you take it to them."

I'm not going to lie, the hub and I sat their, slack jawed, amazed that this teenage comment came out of our 7 year old's mouth. The kiddo lifted his eyebrow and continued. "What? You didn't think I was that quick, cupcake?" This comment came complete with tick of his head from side to side on each syllable of cupcake.

I'm pretty sure I almost pee'd myself. Later that day, in the privacy of our room, the hub and I relived the moment and rolled with laughter. The lesson I've learned from this? There are consequences for any and all actions...even allowing your child to watch 'harmless' YouTube videos.

Are you a gamer? 'Light' like me? Serious? Has some decision you made had as dire consequences as my decision about YouTube.

Adios A to Z, Hello Print Books and Conference Season

A to Z is over! *Cue the streamers and confetti* I'm so happy to announce that I made it through the whole month, picked up several really interesting new blogs to follow, and made some great new friends. I hope everyone enjoyed getting to know some of my favorite Sci-Fi/Fantasy characters. My goal was to introduce you to at least one new story you'd never heard of and judging from your comments, I was successful.

This week, I experienced another happy dance worthy moment: I received my very first box of books in the mail. Not going to lie...I smelled, kissed, and waved them around like a lunatic. In case you aren't certain: Dreams do come true, folks. *shakes out shameless plug* If you haven't checked out Lost Haven yet? It's now available in print or e-book on Amazon. The audio version will be available later this month.

This last weekend I attended the annual OWFI Conference, a local writer's conference that I enjoy volunteering for each year. This year I volunteered to be on the costume committee. We had our first costume contest and it was such fun. I had just finished the paranormal romance, Nefertiti's Heart by A.W. Exley, when I first learned of the contest so I went with a steampunk themed costume. Anyone who knows me and my love of all things pearl, lace, and Victorian era, won't be surprised.

It was a huge success with the winners going home with a huge bag of goodies including 2 bottles of wine, Starbucks, free book cover, gift cards, and various writing supplies. I can't wait to do it again next year! Is it too soon to start planning my next costume? *grin*

And to top the whole weekend off, I won my first conference writing contest award!! Woot!

How was your A to Z? Have you read Lost Haven? Been to or plan to attend any good conferences this year? Have any ideas for an interesting costume for next year?

~Z~ is for Zeddicus Zu'l Zorander

My Theme for the 2014 A to Z Challenge is: SciFi/Fantasy Characters in Novels

I'll introduce you to a new scifi/fantasy character from the plethora of novels I've read over my lifetime. My goal is to entice those who maybe haven't read much in the genre I write and share why I find these characters so interesting. I hope you'll enjoy taking the ride with me.

~Z~ is for Zeddicus Zu'l Zorander from Terry Goodkind's Sword of Truth Series

In the aftermath of the brutal murder of his father, a mysterious woman, Kahlan Amnell, appears in Richard Cypher's forest sanctuary seeking help . . . and more. His world, his very beliefs, are shattered when ancient debts come due with thundering violence.

In a dark age it takes courage to live, and more than mere courage to challenge those who hold dominion, Richard and Kahlan must take up that challenge or become the next victims. Beyond awaits a bewitching land where even the best of their hearts could betray them. Yet, Richard fears nothing so much as what secrets his sword might reveal about his own soul. Falling in love would destroy them--for reasons Richard can't imagine and Kahlan dare not say.
In their darkest hour, hunted relentlessly, tormented by treachery and loss, Kahlan calls upon Richard to reach beyond his sword--to invoke within himself something more noble. Neither knows that the rules of battle have just changed . . . or that their time has run out.
This is the beginning. One book. One Rule. Witness the birth of a legend.

Zedd is the First Wizard and Richard Rahl's grandfather. The thing I like best are his bits of advice to Richard. "True as toasted toads", "Bags!", "Wizards First Rule: People are stupid." or "If the road is easy, you're likely going the wrong way."
He is a slightly eccentric old man who marches to the beat of his very own drum, which constantly cracks me up. He is responsible for the comedic relief from the crap Goodkind puts Richard and Kahlan through. He and his 'girlfriend' Addie are hilarious.

Have you checked out my debut novel?!! It's a girl superhero novella appropriate for YA or Adult readers. And it's a quick read for those who find themselves short on reading time! Please give it a go and be sure to let me know what you think!!

Shine 7: Lost Haven by Sabrina A. Fish is available on Amazon. This is my very first published work, so please show some love and check it out! If you like it, please leave a review and check out the rest of the series written by other contributing authors.

In the near future, a few young women manifest extraordinary abilities called "Shine." Each girl's ability is different. Some develop extraordinary mental abilities. Some become physically strong. Others have powers that defy description. But the world does not embrace these Shines. It fears them.

Camille’s life hasn’t been the same since her parent’s supposed murder suicide. When an intruder ransacks her home and she discovers a mysterious thumb drive hidden in her father’s office, she realizes the unwanted changes in her life are just beginning. Politics and conspiracy, betrayal and abduction. Camille is about to discover that change is inevitable and hiding is not an option.

~X~ is for Xena

My Theme for the 2014 A to Z Challenge is: SciFi/Fantasy Characters in Novels

I'll introduce you to a new scifi/fantasy character from the plethora of novels I've read over my lifetime. My goal is to entice those who maybe haven't read much in the genre I write and share why I find these characters so interesting. I hope you'll enjoy taking the ride with me.

~X~  is for Xena Warrior Princess

In a time of ancient gods, warlords, and kings, a land in turmoil cried out for a hero. She was Xena, a mighty princess, forged in the heat of battle...Her courage will change the world.
So I know this isn't a character from a book, BUT she is one of my favorite female characters. She's strong, sexy, brave, and an all around bad ass!! I love her. She's the heroine from my childhood. I used to watch this on TV and dream of adventures and saving the world just like her. *sigh*

~W~ is for Wyl Thursk

My Theme for the 2014 A to Z Challenge is: SciFi/Fantasy Characters in Novels

I'll introduce you to a new scifi/fantasy character from the plethora of novels I've read over my lifetime. My goal is to entice those who maybe haven't read much in the genre I write and share why I find these characters so interesting. I hope you'll enjoy taking the ride with me.

~W~ is for Wyl Thursk, the main character in the Quickening Series by Fiona McIntosh.

In Book 1, Myrren's Gift, Wyl's life takes a major turn when the witch, Myrren, bestows a gift on him as Wyl witness' her death.

Wyl is a young man destined to be his King's General, but finds himself out of favor when a new King is crowned. The new King is jealous of Wyl's popularity with the previous king and with the people. When Wyl witness' the death of a young girl accused of being a witch, the witch gives him a gift. This gift changes Wyl's life and is the impedus that propels the story on.

I'll warn you now...if you thought Robin Hobb puts her characters through the cruel and unusual, then you haven't read The Quickening Series by Fiona McIntosh. Poor Wyl and anyone associated with him aren't safe. I loved these books, read them in record time in fact. The characters could be a little less black and white, but overall I loved the series and would recommend it to other fantasy lovers!

~V~ is Vin

My Theme for the 2014 A to Z Challenge is: SciFi/Fantasy Characters in Novels

I'll introduce you to a new scifi/fantasy character from the plethora of novels I've read over my lifetime. My goal is to entice those who maybe haven't read much in the genre I write and share why I find these characters so interesting. I hope you'll enjoy taking the ride with me.

~V~ is for Vin from Brandon Sanderson's Mistborn Trilogy

A thousand years ago evil came to the land. A dark lord rules through the aristocratic families and ordinary folk labor as slaves in volcanic ash fields. A troublemaker arrives. A rumored revolt depends on an untrustworthy criminal and a young girl who must master Allomancy, metal magic.

Mistborn is an epic fantasy series by Brandon Sanderson. I've chosen one of the main characters, Vin, as my letter 'V'. She is a strong female character who is beaten constantly as a child and learns that no one can be trusted, yet she still finds love and learns to trust. She's brave, fierce, loyal, honest, and tough. The story plays out mostly in her view point. You can't help but love her. She begins the trilogy a bit sad and morose, but by the end has evolved into an amazing, confident female main character. And by the end, well, I didn't see that coming!
Brandon Sanderson is an awesome writer. If you are a fantasy writer, I'd definitely encourage you to give his writing podcasts a listen. They're an amazing fount of information. He truly cares about helping other writers hone their craft.

~T~ is for The Ghost

My Theme for the 2014 A to Z Challenge is: SciFi/Fantasy Characters in Novels

I'll introduce you to a new scifi/fantasy character from the plethora of novels I've read over my lifetime. My goal is to entice those who maybe haven't read much in the genre I write and share why I find these characters so interesting. I hope you'll enjoy taking the ride with me.

~T~ is for The Ghost from Nalini Singh's Heart of Obsidian, Book 12 in her Psy/Changling Series

Step into New York Times bestseller Nalini Singh’s explosive and shockingly passionate Psy-Changeling world…

A dangerous, volatile rebel, hands stained bloodred.
A woman whose very existence has been erased.
A love story so dark, it may shatter the world itself.
A deadly price that must be paid.
The day of reckoning is here.

From “the alpha author of paranormal romance” (Booklist) comes the most highly anticipated novel of her career—one that blurs the line between madness and genius, between subjugation and liberation, between the living and the dead.

I chose The Ghost from Nalini's Singh's Heart of Obsidian, the 12th book in the Psy/Changling series because as THE anticipated book of the series, it delivered with full fireworks. I had no idea who the heck The Ghost was until it was revealed to me, which is amazing in itself. I wondered if it could have been who it ended up being, but the author did such a good job of convincing me that it couldn't be(Sorry to be vague but no way do I want to spoil it for you). You're doing yourself a disservice if you don't read the entire series before this one. Nalini Singh does a masterful job of pulling all the threads together and delivering in an amazing way. And the romance between the two main characters in this book...just perfect!

Have you checked out my debut novella?!

~S~ is for Sazed

~S~ is for Sazed from Brandon Sanderson's Mistborn Trilogy

A thousand years ago evil came to the land. A dark lord rules through the aristocratic families and ordinary folk labor as slaves in volcanic ash fields. A troublemaker arrives. A rumored revolt depends on an untrustworthy criminal and a young girl who must master Allomancy, metal magic.

Sazed begins as a minor character in book 1 of this trilogy, but by book 3 his roll is much larger. As a Keeper he collects knowledge of any and all religions to keep them from fading into obscurity. I love Sazed because he is the character that gave me the inspiration to pick up my own proverbial pen and begin writing. It has much to do with what I was going through in my own life at the time, and I'm sure others would not have the same reaction. However, for me Sazed will always hold a very special place as will the author of this series, Brandon Sanderson.

~R~ is for Richard

My Theme for the 2014 A to Z Challenge is: SciFi/Fantasy Characters in Novels

I'll introduce you to a new scifi/fantasy character from the plethora of novels I've read over my lifetime. My goal is to entice those who maybe haven't read much in the genre I write and share why I find these characters so interesting. I hope you'll enjoy taking the ride with me.

~R~ is for Richard from Terry Goodkind's Sword of Truth Series

In the aftermath of the brutal murder of his father, a mysterious woman, Kahlan Amnell, appears in Richard Cypher's forest sanctuary seeking help . . . and more. His world, his very beliefs, are shattered when ancient debts come due with thundering violence.

This is the beginning. One book. One Rule. Witness the birth of a legend.

The first thing I loved about Richard...he isn't an adolescent teen. He's a handsome, viral, charismatic grown man. This isn't a coming of age story. It's more of a search for identity, though Richard doesn't realize that he doesn't really know who he is. He's happy with his life. He doesn't long for adventure or something extraordinary. He'd be content to settle down in his woods, marry a nice woman, and have babies. But fate has other ideas and Richard is swept toward a destiny he doesn't want and a love that will test him at every turn. I'm actually still reading this very long series, I'm at the end of book 5. The things that poor Richard has to endure are so painful that sometimes I have to put the book down. Terry Goodkind has made me love Richard too much. I can't take the anguish sometimes. But I always come back. This is a long epic, but so well written with such amazing characters. It some ways the Sword of Truth reminds me a bit of The Wheel of Time Series. Especially with the Sisters of the Light. I really see the Aes Sadai in them. I'm enjoying myself so far, though I am ready for Richard to finally get a break and have things go his way for once. Definitely check it out, if you haven't yet!

~Q~ is for Titus Quinn

My Theme for the 2014 A to Z Challenge is: SciFi/Fantasy Characters in Novels

I'll introduce you to a new scifi/fantasy character from the plethora of novels I've read over my lifetime. My goal is to entice those who maybe haven't read much in the genre I write and share why I find these characters so interesting. I hope you'll enjoy taking the ride with me.

~Q~ is for Titus Quinn from Kay Kenyon's Bright of the Sky

Kay Kenyon, noted for her science fiction world-building, has in this new series created her most vivid and compelling society, the Universe Entire. In a land-locked galaxy that tunnels through our own, the Entire is a bizarre and seductive mix of long-lived quasi-human and alien beings gathered under a sky of fire, called the bright. A land of wonders, the Entire is sustained by monumental storm walls and an exotic, never-ending river. Over all, the elegant and cruel Tarig rule supreme.

Into this rich milieu is thrust Titus Quinn, former star pilot, bereft of his beloved wife and daughter who are assumed dead by everyone on earth except Quinn. Believing them trapped in a parallel universe—one where he himself may have been imprisoned—he returns to the Entire without resources, language, or his memories of that former life. He is assisted by Anzi, a woman of the Chalin people, a Chinese culture copied from our own universe and transformed by the kingdom of the bright. Learning of his daughter’s dreadful slavery, Quinn swears to free her. To do so, he must cross the unimaginable distances of the Entire in disguise, for the Tarig are lying in wait for him. As Quinn’s memories return, he discovers why. Quinn’s goal is to penetrate the exotic culture of the Entire—to the heart of Tarig power, the fabulous city of the Ascendancy, to steal the key to his family’s redemption.

But will his daughter and wife welcome rescue? Ten years of brutality have forced compromises on everyone. What Quinn will learn to his dismay is what his own choices were, long ago, in the Universe Entire. He will also discover why a fearful multiverse destiny is converging on him and what he must sacrifice to oppose the coming storm.

This is high-concept SF written on the scale of Philip Jose Farmer’s Riverworld, Roger Zelazny’s Amber Chronicles, and Dan Dimmons’s Hyperion.

Bright in the Sky is a brilliant combo of science fiction and fantasy elements to create an amazing world. I like that it spotlights social issues we experience here on Earth. I'm spotlighting Titus b/c he isn't the most lovable of characters, but that's what I like about him. He's real. He's scarred and his choices reflect this, yet he grows and changes throughout the story. WARNING: Titus' story will make you lose sleep in order to finish reading it.

~P~ is for Pia Giovanni

My Theme for the 2014 A to Z Challenge is: SciFi/Fantasy Characters in Novels

I'll introduce you to a new scifi/fantasy character from the plethora of novels I've read over my lifetime. My goal is to entice those who maybe haven't read much in the genre I write and share why I find these characters so interesting. I hope you'll enjoy taking the ride with me.

~P~ is for Pia Giovanni from Thea Harrison's Dragon Bound

Half-human and half-Wyr, Pia Giovanni spent her life keeping a low profile among the Wyrkind and avoiding the continuing conflict between them and their Dark Fae enemies. But after being blackmailed into stealing a coin from the hoard of a dragon, Pia finds herself targeted by one of the most powerful—and passionate—of the Elder Races.

As the most feared and respected of the Wyrkind, Dragos Cuelebre cannot believe someone had the audacity to steal from him, much less succeed. And when he catches the thief, Dragos spares her life, claiming her as his own to further explore the desire they've ignited in each other.

Pia knows she must repay Dragos for her trespass, but refuses to become his slave—although she cannot deny wanting him, body and soul.

Dragon Bound is a paranormal romance(this is just the fantasy section of romance, right?!) set in our modern day world with the addition of creatures of myth. Dragons, Elves, the Fae, Goblins, etc. I chose Pia because I was not expecting what she ended up being(not going to spoil the story, so go read it!) and it made who she was make so much sense. Dragos is HOT and the romance sizzled. IF you love dragon shifter romance, then you'll definitely love this one.

~O~ for Princess Leia Organa

My Theme for the 2014 A to Z Challenge is: SciFi/Fantasy Characters in Novels

I'll introduce you to a new scifi/fantasy character from the plethora of novels I've read over my lifetime. My goal is to entice those who maybe haven't read much in the genre I write and share why I find these characters so interesting. I hope you'll enjoy taking the ride with me.

~O~  is for Princess Leia Organa from Star Wars

I had to stretch a bit for this one, but hey, her adopted last name begins with 'O' so it counts right?!! *grin*

A long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away . . .

Luke Skywalker lived and worked on his uncle's farm on the remote planet of Tatooine, but he yearned to travel beyond the farthest reaches of the universe to distant, alien worlds. Then Luke intercepted a cryptic message from a beautiful, captive princess . . . and found himself catapulted into the adventure of a lifetime.

Luke Skywalker, proud Princess Leia, and headstrong Han Solo . . . merciless Darth Vader, wise Obi-Wan Kenobi, loyal droids R2-D2 and C-3PO, and the inscrutable Yoda . . . Chewbacca the Wookiee, shifty Lando Calrissian, and the vile Jabba the Hutt . . . all the vivid characters from the Star Wars universe spring to life in these thrilling pages.

The Star Wars Trilogy is a must-read for anyone who wants to relive the excitement, the magic, and the sheer entertainment of this legendary saga now and forever.

Leia is the SciFi version of Wonder Woman. She's strong, smart, can handle weapons, and is a shrewd politician. She gives female characters in the genre a leg up and shows that not all female characters need rescuing. She's the founding member of the Rebel Alliance and as Luke Skywalker's sister is also strong in the force. She trains as a Jedi after the defeat of the Empire.

~N~ is for Nora Salvatore

My Theme for the 2014 A to Z Challenge is: SciFi/Fantasy Characters in Novels

I'll introduce you to a new scifi/fantasy character from the plethora of novels I've read over my lifetime. My goal is to entice those who maybe haven't read much in the genre I write and share why I find these characters so interesting. I hope you'll enjoy taking the ride with me.

~N~ is for Nora Salvatore from Melissa Drake's Daughter of Mythos

Fifteen-year-old Nora Salvatore thinks wizards, fairies, dragons, and demons are the stuff of myth, but she is wrong. Nora is thrown head first into a life of magic and chaos after learning of a mysterious legend surrounding her birth and the magical powers she is supposed to possess. When an army of demons from a parallel world plans the eradication of mankind, only she can close the portals and keep the demons at bay. Can she learn to harness her new-found powers in time to stop them?

Daughter of Mythos is a fast paced young adult fantasy that I would recommend to any young teen. The actions keeps the story moving along and it doesn't bog down with too many details or descriptions. Nora is a foster kid who just wants a normal, stable home and life. I liked the story. A very light, easy read.

~M~ is for Marissa Coulter

My Theme for the 2014 A to Z Challenge is: SciFi/Fantasy Characters in Novels

I'll introduce you to a new scifi/fantasy character from the plethora of novels I've read over my lifetime. My goal is to entice those who maybe haven't read much in the genre I write and share why I find these characters so interesting. I hope you'll enjoy taking the ride with me.

~M~ is for Marissa Coulter from Philip Pullman's The Golden Compass

In a landmark epic of fantasy and storytelling, Philip Pullman invites readers into a world as convincing and thoroughly realized as Narnia, Earthsea, or Redwall. Here lives an orphaned ward named Lyra Belacqua, whose carefree life among the scholars at Oxford's Jordan College is shattered by the arrival of two powerful visitors. First, her fearsome uncle, Lord Asriel, appears with evidence of mystery and danger in the far North, including photographs of a mysterious celestial phenomenon called Dust and the dim outline of a city suspended in the Aurora Borealis that he suspects is part of an alternate universe. He leaves Lyra in the care of Mrs. Coulter, an enigmatic scholar and explorer who offers to give Lyra the attention her uncle has long refused her. In this multilayered narrative, however, nothing is as it seems. Lyra sets out for the top of the world in search of her kidnapped playmate, Roger, bearing a rare truth-telling instrument, the compass of the title. All around her children are disappearing—victims of so-called "Gobblers"—and being used as subjects in terrible experiments that separate humans from their daemons, creatures that reflect each person's inner being. And somehow, both Lord Asriel and Mrs. Coulter are involved.

I chose to highlight Marissa Coulter because she is one of my favorite villains. In the beginning she appears a glamorous, agreeable and charming woman with a sharp intellect. At the same time, we see moments of a determined and rather cold-hearted person who rarely shows her true feelings and is very much used to getting her way in all situations. Her double nature immediately set me up to view her with suspicion. Just when I'm convinced she is a cold-hearted and thoroughly evil woman, she does something to make me pause and rethink my opinion. Overall I found her well rounded and loved the series.

~L~ is for Liath

My Theme for the 2014 A to Z Challenge is: SciFi/Fantasy Characters in Novels

I'll introduce you to a new scifi/fantasy character from the plethora of novels I've read over my lifetime. My goal is to entice those who maybe haven't read much in the genre I write and share why I find these characters so interesting. I hope you'll enjoy taking the ride with me.

~L~ is for Liath from Kate Elliott's Crown of Stars Series

Crown of Stars is set in Novaria, a continent heavily inspired by medieval Europe. Over the course of the novels it is revealed that 2,700 years prior to the present a war erupted between humanity and a race of elf-like beings called the Ashioi. Human sorcerers were able to banish the Ashioi homeland to another plane of existence, but in doing so unleashed a vast cataclysm upon the world that devastated much of humankind. Humanity recovered, initially under the rule of the mighty Dariyan Empire, and later under its successor states, guided by the wisdom of the Daisanite Church (which is heavily influenced by Christianity). The story opens with the kingdoms of Wender and Varre, unified under the rule of King Henry, threatened by both external and internal threats. Sabella, Henry's elder half-sister, is fomenting rebellion against his rule in Varre, whilst the inhuman Eika have invaded from the north, raiding the north coast and threatening the city of Gent. In King Henry's court there is intrigue brewing as Henry has not chosen an heir from his three legitimate children, and it is well known that he favours his bastard son Sanglant, who by the law cannot inherit the throne. The series follows the fortunes of two young people, Alain and Liath, as they are drawn into this web of intrigue, eventually learning that the banished Ashioi homeland is being drawn back to Earth, but its return will spark a cataclysm as great as the one that accompanied its departure.

I read Kate Elliott's Crown of Stars epic series when I was in high school and loved it. I've always felt that it was seriously underrated. The world is very detailed and the characters have to struggle with situations that do not always have a happy resolution.

Liath is one of 2 main POVs that begin the first book of the series. Many people find her hard to relate to. I'm highlighting her because she seemed 'real' to me. If I were to put myself in her situation, experience what she does while knowing and in most cases not knowing what she does, I think I'd also be an uncomfortable person to know. She's just one big identity crisis. No sooner does she discover something about her past, she then discovers it's a lie, or a half-truth at best. She's smart, beautiful, and has powers she doesn't know how to control. Then on top of that she's enslaved and raped. I find her withdrawn character and inability to settle for a normal family  life very believable even as I was frustrated with her for continuing to make the decisions that are believable for her character and experiences.

~Time to Celebrate!~

This weekend, my friends, family, and I celebrated that I'm a published author. Every writer that remembers that first published book will understand my excitement. So happy those closest to me could join me to celebrate!

~K~ is for Kvothe

My Theme for the 2014 A to Z Challenge is: SciFi/Fantasy Characters in Novels

I'll introduce you to a new scifi/fantasy character from the plethora of novels I've read over my lifetime. My goal is to entice those who maybe haven't read much in the genre I write and share why I find these characters so interesting. I hope you'll enjoy taking the ride with me.

~K~ is for Kvothe from Patrick Rothfuss' The Name of the Wind

Told in Kvothe's own voice, this is the tale of the magically gifted young man who grows to be the most notorious wizard his world has ever seen. The intimate narrative of his childhood in a troupe of traveling players, his years spent as a near-feral orphan in a crime-ridden city, his daringly brazen yet successful bid to enter a legendary school of magic, and his life as a fugitive after the murder of a king form a gripping coming-of-age story unrivaled in recent literature. A high-action story written with a poet's hand, The Name of the Wind is a masterpiece that will transport readers into the body and mind of a wizard.

Kvothe is such a complex, human character. Despite his charm and good looks, he is so painfully arrogant. Though he means well, he gets himself into such trouble because of this serious flaw. I loved Kvothe. And I love that he is telling the story. Patrick Rothfuss has such a beautiful way with words. I love everything about the story. The artistry with which it's written, the vibrant and well developed fantasy world, and the very 3 dimensional characters.

~J~ is for Jaenelle

My Theme for the 2014 A to Z Challenge is: SciFi/Fantasy Characters in Novels

I'll introduce you to a new scifi/fantasy character from the plethora of novels I've read over my lifetime. My goal is to entice those who maybe haven't read much in the genre I write and share why I find these characters so interesting. I hope you'll enjoy taking the ride with me.

~J~ is for Jaenelle from Anne Bishop's Black Jewels Trilogy

The Black Jewels Trilogy is an epic dark fantasy and the saga of one young woman's destiny played out against the backdrop of three powerful realms...

Seven hundred years ago, a Black Widow witch saw an ancient prophecy come to life in her dazzling web of dreams and visions.

Now the Dark Kingdom readies itself for the arrival of its Queen, a Witch who will wield more power than even the High Lord of Hell himself. But she is still young, still open to influence--and corruption.

Whoever controls the Queen controls the Darkness. Three men, sworn enemies, know this. And they know the power that hides behind the blue eyes of an innocent young girl. And so begins a ruthless game of politics and intrigue, magic and betrayal, where the weapons are hate and love--and the prize could be terrible beyond imagining.

Why I chose to highlight Jaenelle: In the first book of the trilogy, Daughter of Blood, Janelle is 12 years old. I thought her character was so complex. At times she is sweet, creepy, cute, then scary. She kept me on the edge of my seat. I had no idea how drawn into the series I'd be when I started reading the first book. And the end...holy cow! So painful! When I finished I just sat there, stunned. I felt like the ending ripped to shreds a cherished dream, smiling the entire time.

~I~ is for Ishmael

My Theme for the 2014 A to Z Challenge is: SciFi/Fantasy Characters in Novels

I'll introduce you to a new scifi/fantasy character from the plethora of novels I've read over my lifetime. My goal is to entice those who maybe haven't read much in the genre I write and share why I find these characters so interesting. I hope you'll enjoy taking the ride with me.

~I~ is for Ishmael from Robert Jordan's Wheel of Time Series

The Wheel of Time turns and Ages come and go, leaving memories that become legend. Legend fades to myth, and even myth is long forgotten when the Age that gave it birth returns again. In the Third Age, an Age of Prophecy, the World and Time themselves hang in the balance. What was, what will be, and what is, may yet fall under the Shadow.
Ishmael is one of my favorite villains because he isn't evil for evil's sake. He didn't give in because of a lust for or promise of power. He runs on logic. By logic, he's reasoned that the Dark Lord will eventually win the fight against the Dragon, so therefore the world's years are numbered and it's better to be on the side that will eventually win then not. The other Forsaken believe him to be insane, but really they just don't understand what he does. Ishmael sees the others as fools to believe that the Dark Lord will keep his promises to grant them power. Ishmael understands that the Dark Lord seeks to undo by whatever means possible and when he is done there will be nothing to have power over.

I loved this series. It is long. Jordan tends to repeat information in each book that we already know, but I love the characters and the world. And Brandon Sanderson finishs the series superbly!
