~K~ is for Kvothe

My Theme for the 2014 A to Z Challenge is: SciFi/Fantasy Characters in Novels

I'll introduce you to a new scifi/fantasy character from the plethora of novels I've read over my lifetime. My goal is to entice those who maybe haven't read much in the genre I write and share why I find these characters so interesting. I hope you'll enjoy taking the ride with me.

~K~ is for Kvothe from Patrick Rothfuss' The Name of the Wind

Told in Kvothe's own voice, this is the tale of the magically gifted young man who grows to be the most notorious wizard his world has ever seen. The intimate narrative of his childhood in a troupe of traveling players, his years spent as a near-feral orphan in a crime-ridden city, his daringly brazen yet successful bid to enter a legendary school of magic, and his life as a fugitive after the murder of a king form a gripping coming-of-age story unrivaled in recent literature. A high-action story written with a poet's hand, The Name of the Wind is a masterpiece that will transport readers into the body and mind of a wizard.

Kvothe is such a complex, human character. Despite his charm and good looks, he is so painfully arrogant. Though he means well, he gets himself into such trouble because of this serious flaw. I loved Kvothe. And I love that he is telling the story. Patrick Rothfuss has such a beautiful way with words. I love everything about the story. The artistry with which it's written, the vibrant and well developed fantasy world, and the very 3 dimensional characters.
