The bad boy tattoo artist has a hidden past that threatens to reveal itself. His world is dangerous, riddled with power. Only his control keeps the dark force away, but now it’s a two-edged sword. Now nothing will stop him from making her his.

She is fire and earth

Abigail Woodbury was born into power. As firstborn, she has the gift of the first power. She is wise and can weave the tapestry of time and events but is sensitive, loyal, and practical. To her more adventurous sisters, she's the good girl. If they only knew the fire that burned within her passionate heart.

She's certainly not the kind to attract the interest of the bad boy biker, Beckett Thornton, the man she has secretly loved for years. But when tragedy strikes, and death rips loved ones away, she knows the spell she'll cast to protect their family secrets, and the magic they guard, may cause a split between siblings.

She casts a love spell on an ad, seeking husbands for each one of them. What she didn't expect were the two men who showed up for her. One her heart's desire, the other one determined to destroy it all. Dark secrets come to light and a struggle for power begins.

Blurb:

Five Gates. Five Sisters. Five Very Different Men.

Once there were two worlds connected by five magical gates. Then the Gate Keepers closed the gates and disappeared.

The Gate Keepers have returned

Ripped from her home and sold to the mercenary guild as a child, Kardia Quinones overcame her father’s betrayal and made a place for herself as a respected mercenary. Then war threatens her beloved guild and her homeland.

Sahir Mekala wakes after twenty-three years to find his people on the brink of war and his intended mate unwilling to accept him. But dragons are as stubborn as harpies and he’ll let nothing stop him from claiming her.

When Kardia and Sahir find themselves working together, sparks fly. Despite Kardia’s reluctance to ever trust another male, Sahir sets out to prove exactly how perfect the match between a dragon and harpy can be

Excerpt:

Kardia tested the blade’s cut. When it slid halfway before tearing the rest of the way through the paper, Kardia sprinkled more water on the whetstone’s surface and returned to moving the blade across it.

She’d given each side another ten rounds when Sahir’s voice whispered through her mind. “Are you busy, harpy?”

“Yes.”

“Doing what?”

She wiped a soft cloth along the blade, and then once again lifted it closer to the light while she inspected the blade. “Cleaning and sharpening my weapons, dragon. What do you want?”

“You sound content, despite what some would consider an arduous task.”

“I’m in the process of making my dagger sharp enough to cut annoying dragons into tiny little pieces. Let’s call it my happy place.” A low chuckle traveled down their link, causing a shiver of desire to ripple through her. Kardia clenched her jaw. “Do you have a reason for intruding on my peace?”

When he didn’t answer, she grunted then once again lifted the paper to test the dagger’s edge. This time it sliced the paper with ease. Kardia pulled a palmsized polishing stone from a basin of water on the table and rubbed it along the blade. The door to her suite opened, making Zephyra gasp and scramble to grab her veil. Sahir stepped into the suite and closed the door.

Kardia, nostrils flaring at the refined aroma of sweetly smoked leather, snorted. “Should have known your silence was too good to be true.”

Every time I get on any social media platform, I see people talking about their deteriorating mental health over being trapped inside their home with their spouse and kids 24/7. Complaints range from "The constant fighting is driving me insane" to "There's a reason my spouse and I have jobs...to get a daily break from each other."

And while I understand, I'm actually enjoying own self-quarantine.

Being "forced" to minimize all interactions with the outside world while being surrounded by my little family is freaking awesome! But I only have 1 child. He's 13 and pretty self-sufficient. My hub and I have been working together 24/7 for years now as small business owners, so I'm pretty used to having him around. When I get annoyed, I just retreat to my computer to write or pick up my book to read.
It does WONDERS for your mental health. That and taking a walk. Fresh air and sunshine are great for shaking extreme irritation.
In order to help those of you who aren't as seasoned in having your family up your butt all day, everyday, I thought I'd put my books on sale and offer you a way to escape. All writers are insecure at various times throughout their writing journey and I'm definitely no different. So I've joined in on the Insecure Writers Support Group Blog Hop. The 1st Wednesday of each month I'll post about the insecurities I've been struggling with and/or conquered, and answer that month's IWSG question.

Happy New Year!

It's the start of a new year AND a new decade. Does this mean the new goals need to be extra special? Because we need that extra pressure, right?!

I'm a goal oriented person, meaning, I wonder aimlessly without something to work toward. I know, depending on the goal, that I might not make it in the time frame planned, but I also know I won't accomplish anything at all without the goal in mind.

A good example are my 2019 goals:
Publish Diomere's Healer ~ check
Finish writing Diomere's Mercenary ~ check
Lose 20lbs ~ check
Finish writing book 1 of my rock star romance series ~ FAIL. *sigh*

3 out of 4 isn't bad and I knew going in that the list was ambitious for me, but without it none of these things would have happened at all. And that's what I tell that voice in the back of my head that tries to tell me I failed because I didn't get all everything on my list accomplished.

We goal oriented folks are so hard on ourselves.

So on to 2020! Despite that it's a new decade as well as a new year, I'm reining in my need to go big with my goals. I know me, I know my schedule, and I know how disappointed I'll be if I accomplish less than I did in 2019, SO my 2020 goals are:

Publish Diomere's Mercenary
Write Diomere's Siren
Write the last half of Berezan's Sacrifice
Lose another 10 lbs.

How about you? Did you accomplish all your 2019 goals? If not, do you beat yourself up over it like me? What is your most important goal for 2020? (NOTE: if you don't see a comment box, click "View Original Post" at the end of this blog entry.)

ISWG Question of the Month:

What started you on your writing journey? Was it a particular book, movie, story, or series? Was it a teacher/coach/spouse/friend/parent? Did you just "know" suddenly you wanted to write?

I actually never even dreamed of writing until I was about 28. Two things inspired this dream: I read Brandon Sanderson's Mistborn Trilogy AND I met my friend Ang, who was writing her first book. I've always been an avid reader, but in my mind my favorite authors were these god-like creatures with super-human imaginations. However, after reading the last book of the Mistborn trilogy, I SO badly wanted to be able to make people feel like I did at that moment. I wished so hard I could be as "special" as I believed authors were. Then I met my friend, Ang. She was like me... a stay-at-home-mom. Yet SHE was working on writing her first book. If this friend, an ordinary mom and wife like me, could write a book, then why couldn't I? I started writing that day and everything finally clicked. I'd found my thing and I haven't looked back. That was 9 years ago and I now have 3 novellas and 2 novels published, with a 3rd novel set to publish this year. I'm living my dream.

I recently submitted the 3rd book in The Gate Keeper Chronicles to my editor. And now the waiting begins. I don't know about all of you, but this is always the point where I second guess myself while I wait for my editor to read the book and tell me what she thinks.

It's torture!

My editor is amazing and I'm not at all scared of her...sort of...😆😆😆

Thank goodness this month is NaNoWriMo. I'm channeling all my worry toward completing a prequel novella for this same series. After all, I'm going to worry regardless, so I might as well make it productive worrying.

What do you do while waiting to hear what someone thinks of your new book?

IWSG Questions of the Month

What's the strangest thing you've ever Googled in researching a story?

Let me preface my answer with a reminder: I write Fantasy...and Romance... So, when I created shape-shifting creatures for my steamy fantasy romance novel, I needed to first figure out if the half human/half "magical being" would be possible. For example, in Diomere's Healer, I mentioned a half-breed Naga/Human offspring. A Naga is a creature with a human top half and a snake bottom half. I didn't know the first thing about snake physiology, so I looked it up. And, in fact, some species of snakes DO have penis/vagina physiology. In fact, these snakes have TWO penises, so they can get it on, then when one penis finishes, the snake can flip over and immediately insert the other....👀👀👀... Not that I was planning to write any human/snake sex, but I had to know if it was POSSBILE! Now I know...and so do you! You are so welcome! LOL

Do you get nervous each time you turn a book into your editor? Share with me and let me know I'm not alone. And how about that IWSG question of the month? It's one of my favorite research stories to tell. Did you know there were snakes with penises? Talk about overachievers! LOL!!

The days are beginning to cool, even if only slightly here in Oklahoma, pumpkin flavored everything is everywhere, and Halloween decorations are up around my neighborhood.

While I love the summer and all that fun in the sun, I must admit that Fall is my favorite season. I love wearing pretty scarves & boots, enjoying a hot drink without the A/C cranked up, and admiring the changing colors of the trees while taking long walks.

This Fall is beginning with LONG overdue edits for the 3rd book in The Gate Keeper Chronicles. I had hoped to have them finished by Sept 1, but that obviously didn't happen. I'll admit to having days where those self-defeating thoughts are so loud I struggle to make any progress. When that happens, I make lists, or if one already exists, I focus only on one item from that list and force myself to complete the task so that the feeling of accomplishment will subdue that negativity.

YAY FOR LISTS!

What do you do when negative thoughts get you down and slow your progress, giving you those editing blues? What's your favorite season? Are you a fan of pumpkin everything?

IWSG Question of the Month

It's been said that the benefits of becoming a writer who does not read is that all your ideas are new and original. Everything you do is an extension of yourself, instead of a mixture of you and another author. On the other hand, how can you expect other people to want your writing, if you don't enjoy reading? What are your thoughts?

While I can concede that not having been influenced by other's work can lead to original ideas, I think that being a reader is necessary to understand the ebb and flow of a story. If you aren't a reader, you won't inherently understand this and will have to spend considerable time learning it. How can you understand what good writing is, if you never read? And even if a writer doesn't read, they most likely watch television, so are they really coming up with original ideas? I very much doubt it! I, as a self-proclaimed book nerd, may be biased, but I don't see how someone who doesn't read could become a writer who's work others would enjoy reading.

What do you think?

The 1st Wednesday of each month I'll post about the insecurities I've been struggling with and/or conquered, and answer that month's IWSG question.

It's September! Happy Birth-Month to me! It seems perfect, then, to talk about unrealistic and unmet expectations, because I'm good at setting them and then being disappointed in myself. You'd think that after "almost" 37 years, I'd understand that I hate the editing process, am prone to procrastination of those things I don't care for, and to give myself twice the time I'd like to complete such tasks.

You'd think. *sigh* But apparently, this isn't the case.

I'm STILL working on edits for Diomere's Mercenary. Edits I'd hoped to have completed by September 1st. Here this day is and I'm far from finished. The negative voices are there. They like telling me I'm never going to be successful if I don't learn to love editing, that I'll never get this series finished, and that I'm too big of a procrastinator to ever get more than one book done a year.

And just like every time these doubts rear their head, I clench my teeth and tell them to shut it. I remind myself that I get better, faster, and need edit fewer number of drafts with each book.

Now if I didn't have 4 other projects that are begging to be written...which would be infinitely more fun than editing!

My dream writing spot would be in a secluded mountain cabin overlooking Lake Tahoe in Nevada. The hubs and I were married there and I fell in love with the area. One day I hope to own a vacation home with a writing cave that includes a picture window overlooking the lake.

Do most writers hate editing or is this just me? Do you have a birthday this month? Virgo or Libra? Have you been to Lake Tahoe? The Cali or Nevada side? Isn't it just beautiful?!

In July, I participated in the Camp NaNoWriMo Challenge and I FINISHED the 3rd book of The Gate Keeper Chronicles!! Woot!

However, it wasn't easy. Writing the end of a book is always bitter sweet. It's the point when I worry that I've written an entire book of utter rubbish, that I may not be able to tie things up in a satisfactory way, and that I didn't tie into the overarching series plot enough. So much unnecessary stress!

Which they do, but now, in the first days after the challenge has been successfully conquered, I'm beating myself up for not being just as productive EVERY month. Unfortunately, just as I'm an emotional eater, I'm also an emotional writer. If I'm stressed, depressed, tired, sick, or any other number of negative emotion that we humans can dip into for no reason at all, I will eat and not write. *sigh*

To combat this horrible tendency of mine, I work out daily, join blogs hops like this one, and I participate in NaNoWriMo events and/or writing sprints with other writers.

In short, I'm human.

The August IWSG Question: Has your writing ever taken you by surprise? For example, a positive and belated response to a submission you'd forgotten about or an ending you never saw coming?

Many times! But the one that always stands out most is how The Gate Keeper Chronicles has turned out. It's a fantasy romance series with a hot steam level, but when I started it, it was intended to be a Middle Grade Fantasy adventure about a Mer prince and pirates. I even wrote a whole first draft TO THE END! But then my critique group said the story was just okay and suggested the Mer prince's aunt was a much more interesting character. They said I should write the story from her perspective instead. As some of you may know, that Mer prince is Reis and his aunt is the heroine of Diomere's Exile, Nadia.

Making the change from straight fantasy to fantasy romance was another huge issue, but that's a story for another day.

BUT...

So I'm here instead, epically procrastinating by writing this blog. I mean, it needed to be done anyway, right? *sigh*

In fantasy, ordinary battle scenes are difficult because they need to be exciting, while also making sense. The writer needs to have some idea how fighting with whatever weapon is being used works. You don't want your readers to put your book down in disgust because you wrote a battle scene so unbelievable that they're left thinking you're an idiot writer. Or worse, have them be bored! It's an important balance, excitement and logic.

So when you take battle scene and add it to climax scene, the point when the shit hits the fan, things become even more tricky. You have to write an exciting and convincing battle scene while also bringing everything you've set up together so that it all leads to some kind of resolution. And since this book is fantasy romance, that resolution between the hero and heroine is VERY important. It's so complex and challenging.

For me, anyway.

I KNOW what needs to happen, but HOW to make it happen is daunting. These scenes always take me several days to write because of their complexity...and because I procrastinate out of fear. I'm afraid I'll make it too cheesy, underwhelming, or just plain stupid. *sigh* Maybe I should have used this post for the insecure writers network day.

Despite that demon, Doubt, whispering in my ear, I love writing these scenes because my characters finally get the happy ending they've been working toward throughout the entire book. So I'm going to end this post and go figure out how to help Kardia and the dragon queen kick the bad guy's ass before he kills Sahir. Because who doesn't love when the heroine saves the day?
I'm talking tent camping, folks.

That's right. Community showers and toilets, food cooked on camp stoves or over the fire, and a thin fabric shelter to keep the wild life at bay for 5 days. And while all of that sounds over-the-top fun, it's the fact that my siblings and their families will be joining us! Squeeeeee!

If you've been following me for any length of time, you know that my siblings are one of my favorite parts of this crazy life I live. Each of us only 2 years apart of less, we are a loud, rowdy bunch with kids and spouses who fit right into our crazy.

My sister and two brothers, all younger than me, are the reason that siblings play such an important role in my books. They inspired Nadia's excitement when Arri arrived in Diomere's Exile and the hilarity that ensued when Arri had her first dreamsharing experience in Diomere's Healer. Without my siblings, my life would have been so much less entertaining and lack the beauty of life with people who grew up in the house.

Now, to some of you, camping out in the Oklahoma heat (think 95 degrees plus and humidity) may sound like a horribly uncomfortable experience, but you would be wrong. They make those quiet generators now and tiny air conditioner fans. Oh the gloriousness that is modern technology. My phone shall stay charged and ready to take a million photos, my camp site shall have the safety of string lights to keep us from killing ourselves by tripping over tent tie-downs in the dark, and we shall have cool air when we sleep at night! All this combined with the fellowship of time with my siblings makes camping the BEST experience ever, in my humble opinion.

Or should I call it glamping?
Is there anything sexier than a man who is a great dad? A man with children who's eyes light up when they see him. A man who will get down in the floor and play with his children for hours without complaint? A man who makes his children a priority, NOT an afterthought?

I don't think so either. I'm lucky enough to have married that sort of man. The bond my son has with his dad is special, silly, full of pranks, and unbreakable. Though I'm often the target of those pranks, it makes my heart so happy to hear my son's innocent laughter when they are putting something ornery together and don't think I can hear them.

So, it really shouldn't be any surprise that I also love reading about good fathers. So this post is going to highlight some of my favorite fictional daddys. If you haven't read the books they feature in, then you haven't been following me long, or you haven't been listening, because they come from a few of my favorite books/series.

#1: Atticus Finch from To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee

Perhaps one of my most favorite books of all time, it is Atticus and his unwavering moral backbone that insists on seeing things from more than his own point of view that made him one of my favorite fiction fathers. AND he makes sure to teach this skill to his children. If everyone was as wise, patient, and determined to do the right thing, this world would be a much better place.

#2: Anthony Kyriakus & Leon Kyriakus from the paranormal romance Psy/Changeling Series by Nalini Singh

Born into a Silent Psy world, they nevertheless loved their children and created bonds with them no matter the expectations of the fertility contracts. Anthony was a quiet member of the rebellion that worked tirelessly to save those suffering under the ruling coalitions cruel rule and would go to any lengths to keep them safe. Leon never stopped looking for his daughter after she was taken. And his love for her shown through even Silence when she was returned to him. Anthony & Leon will always be two of my favorite fantasy fathers.

#3: Mr. Lancaster from The Fault in Our Stars by John Green

Father of main character, Hazel Grace, Mr. Lancaster influences his daughter's perspective on life. Suffering from cancer which has jaded her, she mocks him for being more emotional, especially during hard times, but she also acknowledges that he is a wise man. He also doesn't overly cosset her, showing a willingness to call her out when she is out of line. Most importantly, she knows he loves her and her mother. I can't imagine being a parent with a child in this situation and I admire Mr. Lancaster for how he manages to still be a good parent while suffering from what I imagine is a crushing fear for his child.

So there you go. If you haven't read any of these books, I would encourage you to do so. They are fantastic. If you have any books with fabulous fathers that you think I should read, do comment below and let me know!

Happy Mother's Day to all the moms out there!!

Growing up as the oldest of 4 siblings and 14 cousins, I felt like I got all the baby time I could handle and didn't intend to have any children of my own. Then I met my husband and decided maybe I'd give it a go at least once.
I've accomplished much in my life to be proud of, but my son and the amazing person he is will ALWAYS be my proudest accomplishment.

Did you always imagine being a mother or are you like me? Either way, this day is about you and I hope it's an amazing one!

To continue celebrating, I thought I'd mention 3 of my favorite mothers in fantasy/paranormal romance. These women totally kill this mom thing and let me know that I'm not alone in some of the crazy antics I have to put up with from my family.

#1 & #2: The Psy/Changeling Series by Nalini Singh- It's a toss up between Tamsyn and Ashaya.

In Book 5, Hostage to Pleasure, Ashaya may have had to hide her love for her son thanks to Silence, but that doesn't mean she wasn't willing to do whatever it took to keep him safe...even if it meant tangling with the scary cat Changelings.
#3: The Dragon Kin Series by G.A. Aiken- Queen Annwyl

In Book 3, What a Dragon Should Know, Annwyl gives birth to half dragon/half human twins. As fierce in her love for her babes as she is scary and crazy, Annwyl knows her chances of making it through the birth alive are low and tells her family to save her babes if a choice has to be made. This series makes you laugh out loud many times, but that doesn't mean the author can't pull your heart through a wringer too... and boy does she.
This past weekend, I was asked to speak to the members of a local writing group about the business side of writing fantasy. That is to say, the group's members wanted to know about the market, what publishers are the best, and which agents to seek out.

It turned into a pretty good presentation, and while anyone can find this information with a little research, it can be overwhelming for new writers, so I thought I'd share a little of what I covered here. Back when I was new, I would have loved someone to lay it out for me.

The Fantasy Market

What we hear: The Fantasy Market is over-saturated.

Is it true? Yes and no. Fantasy does seem to be the go to genre for aspiring authors. They believe that it must be easy since they can just make up whatever they want, when in all actuality, fantasy is much harder, takes more time, and requires more skill, IMO, than setting a story in the world that already exists. A fantasy writer first has to put in hours upon hours of time and research to build a world that is unique and full of varied cultures and peoples while still adhering to the rules set for that world. Then there is the magic system...yes, magic isn't real, but it needs to be believable within the context of that world for which you've created it and that takes more time and research. After all this time, a fantasy author finally reaches the point where non-fantasy authors start...creating fully developed characters and developing that characters journey. Finally, it's time to start writing, rewriting, and editing. Unfortunately, many authors don't put in the time required, which is where the "over-saturated" rumor comes along. Those who say it's over-saturated aren't talking about the genre having too many books on the market, not at all. They're talking about the amount of poorly done fantasy books out there.

So, should you write in the fantasy genre? If you love it, absolutely. There are tons of fans to reach. In fact, according to Forbes, sales of fantasy/sci-fi books have doubled since 2010 with the subgenres: Paranormal Romance and Urban Fantasy the top 2 most sought after, while epic fantasy is a distant third. Think about it. Fantasy has one of the largest groups on Goodreads, one of the largest sections in bookstores and libraries, and more fantasy/sci-fi books have been turned into movies than any other genre.

How does an author find fantasy/sci-fi readers/fans?

Join communities as a fellow fan and be an active member in discussions on favorite books, movies, shows, etc. These groups usually have promo days for the authors of the group to share their work. If you're an established member and your name is familiar to the other members, you'll most certainly have ready fans willing to buy your book, plus being an active participant is fun!

Book signings: Think outside the box. Go to your fans. Gamer stores and comic book shops are sure to be more successful than a coffee shop signing.

Conventions/Niche Events: Sure Comic Con booth fees can be expensive, but if you can split a table with another author or artist, it's totally worth it. And don't just stay behind the table. Many fantasy/sci-fi fans are somewhat socially awkward, if you're standing behind your table watching them approach your table without saying anything, they are going to avoid eye contact and walk right on by. Greet them with a smile and offer a free book mark. It'll do wonders toward making potential readers comfortable enough to stop at your booth. Also, ask to be a guest speaker, take part in a panel, and attend schedule networking events. All of these things work to drive people toward your booth. Don't forget to always have a newsletter subscriber signup list at every event.

Newsletter & NL Swaps: Building your subscriber list at every event is SO important. These are potential fans you can email every time you have a release or sale. It cost you nothing, but time and can be so rewarding. Building your subscriber list is also important for swapping with another author in your genre. This is cross promotion and is another no cost way to reach fantasy fans.

Blogging/Guest Blogging: While time consuming, blogging can also be a valuable way to attract fans. Blog about all things fantasy, go visit and comment on other fantasy blogs, and if you're consistent, you'll reach fantasy fans from every corner of the world. Guest blogging is the same type of cross promotion as newsletter swaps. You and another fantasy blog post on each other's blogs to attract news fans from the other's blog followers.

Podcasts: There are tons of fantasy podcasts out there. Reach out to one about doing an author interview when you have a new book coming out.

the Manticore

Origins: Persia, originally called Martichorus

Appearance: Head of an old man with a long beard, body of a lion, scorpion tail, dragon wings, and sharp claws.

Legend: This beast is said to be a man-eater that lays in tall grasses so it's beastly body is hidden and only the non-threatening image of it's human head is visible. When humans near, it pounces on them, devouring them in one bite, or shoots stingers from it's tail, rendering them helpless while feasts on them. Despite having the head of a human, the beast couldn't talk, but rather had a trumpet sound for a voice. Disappearances were often blamed on this fierce creature.

The Gate Keeper Chronicles: In my series, the Manticore people look a bit more human. They have lion eyes and thick, lion-mane-like hair with three horns growing from their forehead like a crown, but their faces and bodies are human. They are tall with dragon wings, scorpion tails, and talons for feet. My inspiration for this race came from DeviantArt artist, kikicianjur, and his amazing depiction of a more humanoid Manticore. Here is that art: (Please click on the image to go visit the artist's page on DeviantArt)!! Of course, my manticore race's face is more human.

In Diomere's Healer, we meet Treves when Arri saves his life. We eventually learn that his people are actually Manticore shifters who have been unable to shift due to a curse caused by one of their ancestors. It was fun to write such an unusual hero and hope you'll consider giving the book a try if you haven't yet. I don't think you'll be sorry.
