~R~ is for Richard

My Theme for the 2014 A to Z Challenge is: SciFi/Fantasy Characters in Novels

I'll introduce you to a new scifi/fantasy character from the plethora of novels I've read over my lifetime. My goal is to entice those who maybe haven't read much in the genre I write and share why I find these characters so interesting. I hope you'll enjoy taking the ride with me.

~R~ is for Richard from Terry Goodkind's Sword of Truth Series

In the aftermath of the brutal murder of his father, a mysterious woman, Kahlan Amnell, appears in Richard Cypher's forest sanctuary seeking help . . . and more. His world, his very beliefs, are shattered when ancient debts come due with thundering violence.

In a dark age it takes courage to live, and more than mere courage to challenge those who hold dominion, Richard and Kahlan must take up that challenge or become the next victims. Beyond awaits a bewitching land where even the best of their hearts could betray them. Yet, Richard fears nothing so much as what secrets his sword might reveal about his own soul. Falling in love would destroy them--for reasons Richard can't imagine and Kahlan dare not say.
In their darkest hour, hunted relentlessly, tormented by treachery and loss, Kahlan calls upon Richard to reach beyond his sword--to invoke within himself something more noble. Neither knows that the rules of battle have just changed . . . or that their time has run out.
This is the beginning. One book. One Rule. Witness the birth of a legend.

The first thing I loved about Richard...he isn't an adolescent teen. He's a handsome, viral, charismatic grown man. This isn't a coming of age story. It's more of a search for identity, though Richard doesn't realize that he doesn't really know who he is. He's happy with his life. He doesn't long for adventure or something extraordinary. He'd be content to settle down in his woods, marry a nice woman, and have babies. But fate has other ideas and Richard is swept toward a destiny he doesn't want and a love that will test him at every turn. I'm actually still reading this very long series, I'm at the end of book 5. The things that poor Richard has to endure are so painful that sometimes I have to put the book down. Terry Goodkind has made me love Richard too much. I can't take the anguish sometimes. But I always come back. This is a long epic, but so well written with such amazing characters. It some ways the Sword of Truth reminds me a bit of The Wheel of Time Series. Especially with the Sisters of the Light. I really see the Aes Sadai in them. I'm enjoying myself so far, though I am ready for Richard to finally get a break and have things go his way for once. Definitely check it out, if you haven't yet!

  1. You're only up to book five? Oh dear... there's still so much more to come! You'll need to emotionally fortify yourself. Especially for the last three books.
